Phoenix's Heartbeat: The Enduring Legacy of Boycott Bar

In the vibrant Melrose district of Phoenix, a beacon of community, connection, and celebration stands tall: Boycott Bar. Far more than just a nightlife spot, Boycott has cemented its status as a cherished sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly as a historically significant lesbian bar.

Audrey Corley's Vision: From Crossroads to Community Hub

The spirit of Boycott Bar is inextricably linked to its owner, Audrey Corley.

Her journey began not in the neon glow of a bar, but on the basketball court, a place she credits with saving her life during a challenging youth. This early experience in finding community through sports would profoundly shape her future.

Corley's venture into creating safe spaces for queer women started modestly.

After years in the industry, in 2004, she launched a 'roaming party' - a gathering for queer women at a time when dedicated venues were scarce. What began as an intimate event, expecting perhaps 50 attendees, famously drew over 500, signaling a clear demand for such spaces.

This overwhelming response paved the way for the establishment of Boycott Bar.

In 2012, Corley officially purchased the physical bar space, transforming it with her long-time friend, Nicole Ennis, into the beloved Boycott. At a time when dedicated lesbian bars across the country were dwindling, Boycott emerged as a vital addition, revitalizing a historically lesbian space and ensuring its legacy continued.

A Sanctuary for All: More Than Just a Bar

Boycott Bar quickly became a cornerstone of Phoenix's "gayborhood," renowned for its welcoming atmosphere.

Step inside, and you'll find cozy banquettes, high-top tables, and an open space where friendships are forged, laughter rings out, and memories are made. It's a place where women gather to dance the night away, enjoy karaoke, and experience drag nights, all within a proudly LGBTQ+-owned and operated environment.

Beyond entertainment, Boycott serves a deeper purpose.

It's a venue for fundraisers and political actions supporting women's rights and the broader LGBTQ+ community. Audrey Corley emphasizes the bar's role in cultivating a sense of family and long-term friendships, creating a space where people's hearts feel full. Even in a shifting political climate, Corley's commitment remains unwavering: "We're going to be here and keeping loving how we love."

Expanding the Legacy: Title 9 Sports Grill

The success and strong community foundation of Boycott have empowered Audrey Corley to expand her vision.

Just steps away along the vibrant Melrose strip, she recently celebrated the grand opening of Title 9 Sports Grill. This new venture is inspired by the significant Title IX legislation, reflecting Corley's own background in sports and her continued dedication to empowering women and fostering inclusive spaces.
